YAA Day of Service 2009

Aim:

The YAA Day of Service seeks to open the eyes of youth by bringing them face to face with people affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS.

The YAA Day of Service is at the core a group activity where individual church youth groups are paired for a day with families affected with/at risk of HIV.  The youth will be given specific service tasks to do in order to minister to, and understand what reaching out to affected families means.

What we will do:

1. We will meet in different regional centres nearest to you  (Ambarnath, Kurla, Mulund, Thane etc) on the morning of November 28^th.

2. There we will have a short orientation with a time of worship, task distribution and pep talk.  We’ll pray and move out to the families assigned.

3. We will spend the bulk of the day with the affected/at risk families doing specific acts of service and kindness.  Have a packed lunch together.  Talk.  Share.  Worship.  Build friendships.  Leave after tea at 4 PM.

4. Finally we travel to the JSK Centre in Thane for a debriefing and celebration session from 6-8 PM.  This will involve testimonies, prayer and an inspirational message as well as music and understanding the way ahead.  Your youth group will be able to meet with members of other youth groups.  The day will end with a fellowship meal.

Activities:

Are you ready to get your hands dirty? We have exciting activities for you to help you understand the kind of life HIV affected people live.  We want you to open your eyes to seeing poverty and dignity – and to give you an opportunity to help them within your capacity, so that by the end of the day you have the satisfaction of doing some good work and learning a bit more about life.

The varied activities include:

1. House keeping and improving their environment
2. White washing and repairing homes
3. Helping our friends in their profession
4. Cooking with them and sharing the meal

Apart from the activities we come to hear their life experiences and the problems they are facing and praying with them.

Program:

1. Meeting at the regional centres at 9 am sharp.
2. Time of prayer and orientation 9.00 – 10.30 am.  Then disperse for service
3. Service & fellowship with affected families 11 am –  4 pm     (enjoy a meal with the family you are serving with)
4. Travelling to JSK Centre Thane (4-5 PM)
5. All youth groups meet at the JSK Centre at 5.30 PM.  Have a cup of tea and enjoy the singing.
6. From 6-8 PM: sharing, reflections, challenge and future action plans
7. Share a fellowship dinner at 8 pm.
